This review is available on Google Books, so you will have to scroll down a little to see the start of the listing for Harpoon Harry’s.

Harpoon Harry’s restaurant is featured in Michael Haskins’ novel ‘Chasing the Wind.’  On his blog, Mr. Haskins says, “I want to take them to Harpoon Harry’s for an early breakfast, it just feels like what they should do.” Why? He goes on to say, “Harpoon Harry’s is on Caroline Street in Key West. It’s a small breakfast-lunch diner and the walls are glass doors that open onto the street. Service begins at 6:30 a.m. and it’s still an early dusky morning in the story, so I put them there.”

Built just after World War II, Harpoon Harry’s restaurant has a 1950′s appearance that remains a classic. This affordable restaurant is the only genuine American diner left in the Florida Keys.   Harpoon Harry’s has been  serving quality food in an eclectic environment for decades.

The short documentary above was recorded in 2010 and can be found on YouTube. It helps give the viewer an idea of the Harpoon Harry’s breakfast experience.

Molly’s Barbar Shop in the mid 1960s

Our breakfast ranges from the traditional  eggs, toast and coffee to grander house specialties like Lobster Eggs Benedict. Locals mingle with tourists and discuss news of the day and the latest gossip over Cuban coffee at the lunch counter. The staff is welcoming, helpful and efficient giving everyone a chance to start their day with a smile.

The picture above was taken in the mid 1960s when the building housed Molly’s Barber Shop and apartments. A couple of years after that, the Fisherman’s Cafe relocated  to the space from their original location across the street.

While the building has been improved over the years, it retains the original 1950′s ambiance and flavor.  The dining room is loaded with original artwork of all styles and mediums.  You’ve got to check out our stained glass collection!

Front Page Key West Citizen April 1, 2007

On April 1st, 2007 the front page of the Key West Citizen announced the sale of Harpoon Harry’s restaurant for $2.1 million at an auction the previous day.  While the correspondent correctly reported that it was a reserve auction, the reporter never bothered to check whether the minimum bids had been met.

“When I came in to work that morning and read the Local Newspaper headlines I was bowled over,” said Co-owner Ron Heck. “It was like looking in the paper and reading your own obituary.”   It was a huge typo and was eventually retracted in a later news article.

Open Mike Nights – Monday 7PM to 10PM

Every Monday evening from 7PM to 9PM is Open Mike Night at Harpoon Harry’s. The host  creates an atmosphere that feels like a family gathering. That is – if your family has a heaping helping of musical talent. Anyone & everyone is encouraged to get up and perform if they desire. If it is your first time playing for an audience, the compassionate environment makes it extremely easy to feel comfortable.

This Open Mike is similar to what you might find in a folk club, but with a much broader range of musical styles that can range from singer-songwriter to rock or jazz to down home fiddle music.

Get here early to sign up for your chance to be a star, if only for a night.

The quality of the performers is usually quite good. Many of the experienced musicians in town come to Open Mike Night because it gives them a chance to try something new or different without pressure from an audience that is paying to see their usual act. The musicians can relax and try something out of the ordinary and that is what makes this venue so special for both the performers and the audience. Other times musicians will drop by to watch the show or sit in for a song or two. Or three. Thus, the camaraderie makes it feel like old friends gathering who share the love of music.

Many of the regular performers who frequent Open Mike Night are excellent singer-songwriters who don’t want to play professionally for whatever reason. They would rather play with old friends or just jam with someone new and different.

It is obvious that the people with talent want to encourage others to develop to their full potential. The result is that everyone who wants a turn on the stage has the support they need. If someone needs a guitar for accompaniment, someone will be there for you.

If you would like to get a little experience performing before a live audience, here is your perfect chance. This avoids the need to get a traditional paying music gig, which of course requires experience. The old catch-22 in action.

If you need some accompaniment, no worries. The musicians are more than willing to play with a new act to help round out their sound. Even without knowing the song they can improvise and create a sound that makes it appear that the performer is a regular member of band. The musical improvisation at Open Mike Night disproves the notion that musicians need to work together for a while before they improvise well. Through the art of improvisation and playing in the moment, an impromptu band can reach an almost magical state of creativity for the performers.

The fact that Harpoon Harry’s is usually packed to capacity on Open Mike Night.  So if you want to try out some new material or check out the Key West music scene be sure to show up at Harpoon Harry’s on Monday night.
